February is here already. Outside the floods, piercing rain and high winds are still with us. On my windowsill a white cyclamen glistens with midwinter cheer. We are just past Candlemas (2nd February) - halfway between the winter and spring solstice. And nearly at Valentine's Day. There have been a few sunny days in between the very wet ones and with the milder winter temperatures have brought the birds out rejoicing in full throat. On Sunday I heard and saw a mistle thrush wildly singing in the treetops, against a backdrop of a clear blue sky. And dainty snowdrops have suddenly appeared above ground. 'Deep sleeps the Winter, Cold, wet, and grey; Surely all the world is dead; Spring is far away, Wait! the world shall awaken, It is not dead, for lo. The Fair maids of February ' (Cicely Mary Barker) And here she is 'The Snowdrop Fairy'
